Is England approaching a housebuilding boom?

One of the Government's biggest goals is to start a construction revolution in the UK, creating more housing and new infrastructure. The latest figures suggest we might be seeing the start of this in England. We want to have a closer look here. Then, if you need help from an architect in London to create a high end luxury home, you can rely on us.

Planning applications up

The latest data from Terraquest shows the first Quarter of 2025 has been a really busy time in terms of planning applications. With figures covering 95% of England, there was an impressive 71,813 submissions during the period. They vary in scope and scale, but show there is a lot going on.

Impressively, the number of planning applications in Q1 2025 is a big improvement over last year. In the same period in 2024, there were 49,776 submissions. It was a tricky time for construction, especially with high costs and political uncertainty. Things are more positive now.

To even further highlight the current positives, the number of planning applications in Q1 this year is the highest it has been since 2022. This is very impressive because back then there was a wave of activity as we began to get back to some normalcy after covid lockdowns.

What does it mean?

There are some important things you can take away from Terraquest's findings. Most crucially, you can see that people want to be getting on with projects. We're happy to help clients here if they want an architect in London.

A crucial thing is you can see the good intentions from all sides. The Government is doing their part with changes to planning policy, more resources for planning departments, and other interventions. Developers and housebuilders are ready to get projects off the ground. Even private individuals are submitting their plans.

It all looks much better for the construction industry in England. We could be looking at the first signs of a housebuilding boom. With the current housing crisis and other issues, it would be fantastic news for the country.

However, it is important to be realistic here too. Projects can have long lead times, especially when it is big sites or complex developments. Some applications also won't be successful. We need to see how many of the Q1 applications move forward later in the year. Plus, we have to keep an eye open to see if new submissions continue to come in at a healthy rate.
